January 1: Major League Baseball will launch its own channel MLB Network on cable and satellite systems in the USA, the last major American sports league to do so.
January 5-15: Arbitration filing period.
January 19-20: Exchange of arbitration figures.
February 1-21: Arbitration hearings period.
March 2-11: Teams may renew contracts of unsigned players
March 5: Second World Baseball Classic begins at Tokyo Dome, Tokyo, Japan.
March 18: Last day to place a player on unconditional release waivers and pay 30 days termination pay instead of 45 days.
March 23: Second World Baseball Classic championship game, at Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles.
April 1: Last day to request unconditional release waivers without having to pay players' full 2008 salary.
April 5: MLB Opening Day; active rosters reduced to 25 players.
April 13: Citi Field will open, replacing Shea Stadium as home of the New York Mets.
April 16: New Yankee Stadium will open, replacing the old Yankee Stadium.
July 14: The 80th Major League Baseball All-Star Game will be held at Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri.

Minor League Baseball

The Florida State League will hold the 48th annual Florida State League All-Star Game at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers, Florida-- home of the Minnesota Twins' Advanced-A affiliate, the Fort Myers Miracle.

International

February 2-7 – 2009 Caribbean Series, to be held with the champions teams from Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Venezuela. The games will be played at Estadio Casas GEO in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico.
March 5-23 – 2009 World Baseball Classic.
June 15-21 – 2009 European Cup
September 9-27 - 2009 Baseball World Cup, to be held across Europe, with the finals in Rome, Italy.
