Major League Baseball

  • January 1: Major League Baseball will launch its own channel MLB Network on cable and satellite systems in the USA, the last major American sports league to do so.
  • January 5-15: Arbitration filing period.
  • January 19-20: Exchange of arbitration figures.
  • February 1-21: Arbitration hearings period.
  • March 2-11: Teams may renew contracts of unsigned players
  • March 5: Second World Baseball Classic begins at Tokyo Dome, Tokyo, Japan.
  • March 18: Last day to place a player on unconditional release waivers and pay 30 days termination pay instead of 45 days.
  • March 23: Second World Baseball Classic championship game, at Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles.
  • April 1: Last day to request unconditional release waivers without having to pay players' full 2008 salary.
  • April 5: MLB Opening Day; active rosters reduced to 25 players.
  • April 13: Citi Field will open, replacing Shea Stadium as home of the New York Mets.
  • April 16: New Yankee Stadium will open, replacing the old Yankee Stadium.
  • July 14: The 80th Major League Baseball All-Star Game will be held at Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri.
