The Ararat railway line is a regional passenger rail service operated by V/Line in Victoria, Australia, that links the state capital Melbourne to the cities of Ballarat and Ararat.
History
V/Line once operated services to Horsham and Dimboola. All services beyond Ballarat were withdrawn on 27 May 1994,1 and in 1995 the One Nation Program regauged the line beyond Ararat. The broad-gauge line between Ballarat and Ararat was closed to all traffic, with the broad-gauge passenger service from Ballarat to Ararat not reinstated until 2004 under the Linking Victoria program.
Services
Ararat station - the end of the line
V/Line operates thrice daily passenger trains on the Ararat line from Southern Cross Station in Melbourne, as well as three coach services connecting with buses at Ballarat.2 Services as far as Ballarat station are operated as the Ballarat Line. Connex Melbourne services also operate as far as Sunshine station as the Sydenham Line.
Classified by V/Line as an Intercity service, seat reservations are required, and most services run limited express between Ballarat and Melbourne.
