Forbidden is a thrash metal band from the San Francisco Bay Area, part of the Bay Area thrash scene, most popular in the late 1980s and the early 1990s. Their early style was a technical thrash metal and later the band included alternative elements on their 1997 album entitled Green.

History

Early years and rise to near fame

Forbidden was originally known as Forbidden Evil, and was formed under it's original line up by founding members drummer Jim Pittman and guitarist Robb Flynn (later of Machine Head). They recorded several demo tapes and appeared on the out-of-print live album Live At Ruthies Inn - The Eastern Front with it's original line up featuring Craig Locicero (guitar), Russ Anderson (vocals), and John Tegio (bass). After line up changes that saw Jim Pittman, John Tegio, and Robb Flynn leave, and saw them replaced by Paul Bostaph, Matt Camacho, and Glen Avelais, the band's name was changed to simply Forbidden in order to prevent the band from being stereotyped as a black metal band. Forbidden Evil was also the name of their first official album, which was released in 1988 and features 3 songs written by Robb Flynn "Chalice Of Blood", "Forbidden Evil", and "As Good As Dead". The "Classic" line-up (until 1989) was Russ Anderson (vocals), Craig Locicero and Glen Alvelais (guitars), Matt mattress Camacho (bass) and Paul Bostaph (drums).

In 1989, Glen Alvelais left the band (joining Testament some years later), his spot filled by Tim Calvert. They released their second studio record Twisted Into Form, which had a moodier feel than their debut, with some "depressing" touches.

Post-Bostaph period and hiatus

Internal problems in the band caused a line-up change once again, with drummer Paul Bostaph (who left, only to receive a call a day later asking to take over from Dave Lombardo in Slayer) replaced by Steve Jacobs. After this, Forbidden released two more albums; however, with no real label support, the band disintegrated after the albums Distortion and Green.

Reunion(s)

In 2001, Forbidden reformed as a one-off for Chuck Billy's Thrash of the Titans benefit concert, under their original name Forbidden Evil.

On October 5, 2007, Blabbermouth.net reported that Forbidden has reformed again for some reunion shows in 2008 both in the US and in Europe - and confirmed for some summer festivals.1 The reunion did not feature either the Forbidden Evil line-up or the one with Jacobs. Gene Hoglan (of Dark Angel, Death and Strapping Young Lad fame) played drums for the bands first few re-union shows, due to Bostaph's prior commitments with Testament, who have been in the studio working on a new album. After that Mark Hernandez (ex-Violence, Heathen) filled in on the drums for the band's European tour, which included an appearance on the main stage at Belgium's Graspop festival. Japanese dates are also lined up for later in the year.

According to various reports on Blabbermouth.net, Forbidden are rumored to be in talks with Nuclear Blast Records about recording a fifth studio album for the label. If it is released, that would be the band's first album of new material since 1997's Green. Forbidden confirmed they are planning a new album in a myspace post in August 2008.
