Territorial autonomy is a defined part of the state's territory that is authorized to govern itself, manage certain matters handed over to its competence. Typically authorized for an internal cultural identity (by ethnic, religious, linguistic, geographical exclusivity) and its social and economic regulations (legislative, administrative and political structures of self-government).

Galmudug self-proclaimed autonomous state	Somalia	Galmudug State proclaimed autonomy within Somalia in 2006. The Somali Transitional federal Government has not recognized this act.
Kosovo	in dispute, claimed by Serbia	De facto independent state with recognition by a number of UN member states. Claimed in whole by the Republic of Serbia as the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija. Previously administered by a United Nations mission (UNMIK) and entered into the Central European Free Trade Agreement (CEFTA) during this period.
Maakhir self-proclaimed autonomous state	Somalia	Maakhir State proclaimed autonomy within Somalia in 2007. The Somali Transitional Federal Government has not recognized this act.

Notes

1. Autonomies that are under formation or in progress: Cabinda.
2. Subnational condominiums like Brčko District are not counted.
3. Subnational monarchies are not included, like Barotseland Kingdom, Seborga and List of subnational monarchs.
4. In the Union of the Comoros federal units (Anjouan,Grand Comore and Moheli) are called autonomous islands.
5. In the Kingdom of Belgium paralelly with federal units (Flemish Region,Walloon Region and Brussels-Capital Region) there are cultural linguistic autonomous communities.
6. Subregional autonomous territories are not included, like Alto Adige/Südtirol, German-speaking Community of Belgium, Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, Rabi Island, Rotuma, Torres Strait Islands, Trentino,... .
7. For clarity local autonomies (local territorial autonomies) are Barbuda, Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, Nenets Autonomous Okrug,Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Vojvodina,... .
8. Also as autonomies very often are treated few states of Myanmar: Chin, Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Mon, Rakhine, Shan and few states of India: Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Gujurat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Orissa, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Kerala, West Bengal and all states of Pakistan (besides Islamabad) .
