Livingston North railway station is one of two railway stations serving the new town of Livingston in West Lothian, Scotland. It is located on the Edinburgh-Bathgate Line 25 km (15½ miles) west of Edinburgh. The other railway station in the town is Livingston South on the Shotts Line.
History
The original Livingston station was opened as Livingston by the Edinburgh and Bathgate Railway on 12 November 1849.1 Between December 1875 and July 1925 it was renamed as Livingstone. British Railways closed the station on 1 November 1948.1 This station was situated a quarter of a mile west of the current station. The new Livingston North which opened in 1986 is situated in the Carmondean area of Livingston - the area further west is still known as Livingston Station.
Reopening
The station's reopening, with a single platform, came as part of the reopening to passenger services of the Edinburgh to Bathgate Line in 1986. Ever since, train services at Livingston North have normally been operated by diesel multiple units (initially Class 101s, then from 1987 Class 150s and by 2008 Class 158 and/or Class 170s).
The 1986 platform at Livingston North was partially built on the solum of the (then) existing up (Edinburgh) line of the railway (which still existed as a double-track freight only line - subsequently, a section of track just under 3 miles in length was removed, and the remaining single line was slewed to serve the new Station and also ease some curvature). This was due to the location of the station in a cutting, and the need to provide ramped access (via a 'switchback' path) to the platform (in addition to a normal Staircase), and to allow space for a car park.
With the commencement of work for the Airdrie-Bathgate Rail Link, much excavation was needed around Livingston North Station to provide the new platform and to avoid complete closure of the existing platform - which would have been unavoidable had the original railway boundary been observed. The new, second platform officially came into use on 20 October 2008, when for the first time in over half a century, passenger traffic served the area on a double track railway. Works continue to complete the transformation of the station. Electrification shall follow in conjunction with the re opening of the through route to Drumgelloch and Airdrie
