The geographical term lower course refers to the third of a river closest to the river's mouth. The lower course has lots of flood plains, also there are ox-bow lakes from where the river has burst its banks and then retreated. Near the mouth of the river (bottom of the lower course) there are small islands. The terms upper course and middle course can also be used to refer to the upper and middle sections of a river.
