The song was written by Neil Hannon about his observations on a bus (possibly the National Express bus). The song details things that he saw during the journey, such as 'The family man/manhandling the pram/with paternal pride'.¹ It has been misinterpreted by some to be a snobbish song towards the working class, however Hannon has denied this rumour.²
