- Staff from first to last train, who are available for ticket sales (including concession cards and V/Line tickets), answering of customer queries, and general running of the station (including, for example, bookings for bicycle locker hire).
The premium station program was commenced in 1994 under the Public Transport Corporation.[2], with Mount Waverley being the first station receiving premium status.[3] By the end of 1995 the number of staffed stations increased from 35 to 51.[4]
The five City Loop stations (Flinders Street, Southern Cross (formerly Spencer Street), Flagstaff, Melbourne Central, and Parliament) are all premium stations. Other stations are assigned premium status based mainly on their level of patronage. There are currently 71 premium stations,[5] including:
Future Premium stations
In 2006 the Meeting Our Transport Challenges plan listed plans to upgrade seven stations on Melbourne's railway network to Premium status during 2007 - 2009. Five stations have already been upgraded (Darling, Mentone, Upfield, Watsonia and Bell) while two more (Burnley and Nunawading) will be upgraded in the near future.[1]
